A lot comes along with being a parent or caregiver. The responsibility of shaping another human-being carries a great deal of weight. Decisions regarding education can have long lasting impacts while being influenced by affordability and accessibility. Parents and caregivers can often feel helpless or overwhelmed. Now, introduce the added considerations necessary when a child is black.
President Obama, by executive order, started the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans in 2012, a reflection of the need to support the education of black children in this country. Concurrently, there was a bombarding from multiple directions of parents and caregivers with the message of “expose your kids to STEM!”
Today’s #BLACKandSTEM asks two questions:
- What did your parents/caregivers do that had a major impact on your education and becoming STEM?
- What are ways that we can support parents as they bring up potential future #BLACKandSTEM?
Parents are invited to respond to questions, ask questions of the #BLACKandSTEM community, and share their concerns regarding their children’s education.
